  • Author: Sophie
  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 1/4 cup for large batch; 3 3/4 teaspoons for small batch 1x

Description

Baharat, also known as Lebanese 7 Spice, is a fragrant and versatile Middle Eastern spice blend combining warm, aromatic spices like cinnamon, allspice, coriander, and cumin. Perfect for enhancing meats, stews, and rice dishes, this blend adds a rich depth of flavor characteristic of Lebanese and broader Middle Eastern cuisine.

Ingredients

Scale

Large Batch (makes ~1/4 cup)

  • 1 tbsp ground all-spice powder (substitute with mixed spice)
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon powder
  • 2 1/4 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 3/4 tsp cumin powder
  • 3/8 tsp ground cloves (substitute more nutmeg)
  • 3/8 tsp nutmeg powder (substitute more cloves)

Small Batch (makes 3 3/4 teaspoons)

  • 1 tsp ground all-spice powder (substitute with mixed spice)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 3/4 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves (substitute more nutmeg)
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg powder (substitute more cloves)

Instructions

  1. Combine the Spices: In a small mixing bowl, add all the measured spices according to the batch size you prefer (large or small). Use a spoon to thoroughly mix them until you achieve a uniform blend.
  2. Store the Blend: Transfer the mixed spices to an airtight glass jar or container. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve flavor and potency. Use within 3 months for optimal freshness, though the blend may last longer depending on your spices’ freshness.

Notes

  • Substitutions are suggested for cloves and nutmeg to balance the flavors if one is unavailable.
  • This spice blend works well in a variety of dishes including grilled meats, soups, stews, and roasted vegetables.
  • Always use fresh ground spices for the best aroma and flavor.
  • Store in an airtight container to prevent moisture and loss of aroma.
  • Adjust proportions slightly to suit your taste preference if desired.
