Description

This Fresh Salmon Tartare with Avocado is a light, elegant appetizer featuring high-quality raw salmon finely chopped and combined with creamy avocado, tangy capers, fresh shallots, and chives. Seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice, grainy mustard, and kosher salt, this dish offers a perfect balance of flavors. Serve it chilled on toasted baguette slices or cucumber rounds for a refreshing, low-carb treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Salmon Tartare

  • ½ lb salmon (boneless and skinless, finely chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons shallot (finely chopped)
  • ½ small avocado (finely chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon capers (chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon chives (finely chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon grainy mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt (more to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Salmon: Thinly slice the salmon lengthwise into 1/8″-wide sheets. Then cut each sheet into 1/8″-long strips, and finally cut the strips crosswise into 1/8″ cubes. Place the finely chopped salmon in a medium mixing bowl.
  2. Chop the Other Ingredients: Finely chop the avocado to match the size of the salmon cubes. Also finely chop the shallots, chives, and capers, then add them to the bowl with the salmon.
  3. Mix the Tartare: Add olive oil, lemon juice, grainy mustard, and kosher salt to the bowl. Gently toss all ingredients together to combine evenly. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  4. Serve: When ready to serve, transfer the salmon tartare to a serving bowl. Accompany with chips, toasted baguette slices, or cucumber rounds for a low-carb option. Garnish with lemon slices and extra chives for added freshness and flavor.

Notes

  • Use the freshest, highest quality salmon available, preferably sashimi-grade, for safety and best flavor.
  • Keep the tartare well chilled until serving to maintain freshness.
  • Adjust lemon juice and salt according to taste preference.
  • Serve immediately after mixing for best texture and flavor.
  • For a dairy-free and gluten-free appetizer, serve with cucumber slices instead of bread.
