  1. Heat the oil: Place a saucepan over medium heat and add 1/4 cup vegetable oil. Allow the oil to warm up before adding any kernels.
  2. Test oil temperature: Drop 2-3 popcorn kernels into the hot oil. When they start to sizzle and pop, the oil is hot enough to add the remaining kernels.
  3. Add kernels and cover: Add the remaining 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels to the saucepan and immediately put the lid on to trap heat and steam.
  4. Shake gently: After a few minutes of cooking, gently shake the saucepan back and forth to ensure all kernels are coated with hot oil and prevent burning.
  5. Pop the corn: Listen closely as the kernels pop. When popping slows to 2-3 seconds between pops, remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the popcorn to finish popping with the lid on.
  6. Serve: Pour the freshly popped popcorn into a large bowl. Season as desired and enjoy your homemade snack!
